When you think of store-bought strawberry jam you’re already thinking of lots of sugar and preservatives, aren’t you? We’re also conditioned to believe that jam is something that only expert chefs make at home. In reality, we couldn’t be more wrong. There is a super simple way to have fresh jam without any refined sugar or preservatives, ready under 5 minutes and made with 4 simple ingredients. Strawberries are not only packed with vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, they’re also a natural mood booster.
This recipe right here is proof that jam is a 5 minute, 4 ingredient possibility. It is free of any preservatives, full of nutrients, and so delicious that you’ll be needing excuses to make different foods to pair it with. Breakfast yogurt or toast topping? Top it up with some jam. made pancakes or waffles? Throw on some homemade jam. Midnight and you need a spoon of yum?
The four simple ingredients that you need are strawberries, lemon juice, honey, and chia seeds. That’s it. The recipe is so simple and good, I don’t know why the whole world isn’t making strawberry chia jam every day. Chia seeds are the secret thickener here, I whip this up every strawberry season, each jar lasts me a week. And once I entered the frozen fruits world, its strawberry jam season the whole year-round.
Ingredients
2 cups fresh or frozen strawberries
Juice of 2 lemons squeezed
2 Tbsp Honey
3 Tbsp of Chia seeds
Cooking Instructions:
- Chop up the strawberries into tiny cubes and place them on a saucepan on low heat. The heat will break down the fruit in 1-2 minutes, and a sauce will begin to form along with the solid pieces of strawberries
- Add in Lemon juice and mash the strawberries down further with a spatula. The acid in the lemon will break down the fruit further till you have a runny texture of strawberry sauce on the hob.
- Pour honey and chia seeds into the heated mixture, and keep stirring for 2-3 minutes while all the ingredients mix well. The chia seeds will start thickening the sauce once heated.
- Do a small taste test with a spoon to adjust the lemon juice or honey based on how tart/sweet you prefer your jam. Switch off the hob, wait for your jam to cool jam and you’re done.
Not only is this jam super easy to make, but its also packed with nutrients. Strawberries are packed with antioxidants, lemon brings out more of its tart flavour along with packing in vitamin C, honey is a natural anti-inflammatory, and chia seeds are the powerhouse of fibre and omega 3 holding the jam together. Use dollops of this jam over granola and yoghurt as a sweet breakfast treat.
