When we think of tea, our minds have been conditioned to think of such trigger words – Masala Chai (if you’re Indian), Green Tea (If you’re trying to be healthy) and Earl Gray (If you’re British, and sitting in a tearoom somewhere). But once you push outside your comfort zone of these trigger words, there exists an entire universe of teas, each packed with their own myriad of benefits. We’re focussing on four herbal blends for female hormone health here, that have enough science backing their claims and have been tried and tested by us.
Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
Red Raspberry leaf has been used as a traditional medicine for female hormone health for centuries. You’re looking at reduced cramps, reduced blood flow during heavy periods, and it’s even prescribed in some cultures to reduce labour pain and helping women prepare for childbirth. This brand is a rare find in India, but the very best source for pure herbal teas.
Dandelion Tea
This is a powerhouse herb in tea form for PCOS. Dandelion are bitter greens that are excellent for the liver, help reduces and flush out any toxin build-up from the liver. Dandelion root tea is bitter, and earthy in taste and definitely takes some time to get used to, but it’s the only one that’s shown positive results in multiple studies targeting insulin resistance for PCOS. Do look for roasted dandelion root tea, and not just dandelion tea. Click here to get the brand that we recommend.
Cranberry Tea
This is one flavour that you already may have tried, considering how popular cranberry juices are as chasers with cocktail mixes. The herbal tea version of cranberry has the same tart taste of the juice, sans the sugar. Cranberry extracts are prescribed to women during UTI’s and the tea does the exact same thing. It prevents yeast infections and also helps with reducing excess water weight that comes with PMS and mid-cycle bloating. Sounds like something the entire female population could do with, right? Here’s something to remember- you don’t need Green tea flavoured with cranberry, get a herbal blend with pure cranberries in it. Tea-Me does a decent blend we get in India for pure cranberry tea.
Spearmint Tea
This member of the mint family is the only natural known cure for hirsutism (excess facial hair) in women. Not to be confused with Indian homegrown pudina (garden mint) or peppermint, Spearmint is native to Africa. There have been studies showing that 2 cups of spearmint a day helps reduce facial growth that despairs women suffering from high testosterone (which is linked to high androstenone levels under the testosterone spectrum). The only issue is, pure spearmint tea is hard to procure in India. Most teas are selling green tea with spearmint flavour as an add on. Please do not buy that, look instead of 100% spearmint tea to avail its benefits. We’ve had bad experiences with some homegrown brands. Indian Chai, which is Amazon’s best-seller in the spearmint tea category has repeated reviews of snails and insects found in the packaging(!) We recommend Vahdam’s mint tea, it has remained consistently on-brand.
